Saturday's Stories

The first Saturday of the college football season is in the books. There were a bevy of nauseatingly boring games with which to choose from. As week 1 draws nearer to it's close, I would like to take a look at the top stories from Saturday.


Injured RB's.









A few teams had their opening season victories dampened by injuries to their top tailbacks. Ohio St. throttled Youngstown St. In a game that should have been headlined by Terrelle Pryor's first touchdown, Beanie Well's injury stole the show. Well's went down with a foot injury in the third quarter while attempting to score on the vaunted Penguin defense.

Georgia's Knowshon Moreno was also hit with the injury bug. Moreno left the game after grabbing his hamstring during a touchdown run against Georgia Southern. Moreno's injury does not seem to be very serious and he should be back in the lineup by next week.

Ohio St. will most likely sit Wells out of next week's historic match up vs. in state rival Ohio. This should give Beanie enough time to recoup before the USC game.



Upsets










While there were no monumental upsets like Appalachian St. over Michigan this week. There were a few games that turned some heads and caused a general "huh?" reaction from fans.

East Carolina pulled off probably the biggest upset of the week by knocking off 17th ranked Virginia Tech in Charlotte. ECU scored the go ahead touchdown by, ironically enough, blocking a Va Tech punt and returning it for a touchdown. I think Skip Holtz just bought himself a better job this off season.

Bowling Green also drank from the upset kool-aid Saturday. The Falcons defeated Dave Wannstedt's Pittsburgh team. The Panthers seem to be battling with Clemson for the title of most overly hyped underperfoming team in America. After Clemson's loss to Alabama, it's a toss up.

Most people didn't see the Texas A&M loss to Arkansas St. late Saturday night. The Red Wolves spoiled TAMU's new head coach Mike Sherman's debut. I don't care how big a rebuilding year this is for the Aggies, there's no way they should ever lose to Arkansas. St.

Mississippi St. became the first SEC team of the season to lose. Louisiana Tech won the battle of the Bulldogs Saturday night. The win was the first one for La Tech over a BCS opponent in Ruston ever. I hope this doesn't start a trend for Sly Croom's bunch.

I would include Utah over Michigan, but I don't consider that an upset. The Utes proved they were a superior team with superior players in Ann Arbor. RichRod has a lot of work to do with his bunch. On the bright side, I think the Wolverines have found their starting QB in Steven Threet.


Coaching Debuts














I've already talked about the losing debuts of Mike Sherman at Texas A&M and Rich Rodriguez at Michigan, respectively. A few other coaches made their debut with their teams on Saturday. Here's how they fared:

Greg McMackin, Hawaii - Got stomped by the Gators 56-10.

Bill Stewart, West Virginia - Defeated Villanova with the best passing performance of Pat White's career.


Paul Wulff, Wasshington St. - Lost to Oklahoma St. in Seattle. Wazzou fans are already booing the new regime.

Ken Niumatalolo, Navy - His Midshipmen throttled Towson in Annapolis.

Bobby Petrino, Arkansas - Barely won against 1-aa Western Illinois. I was hoping for the upset all the way through. If Arkansas continues that level of play, they will be horrendous this season.

Jerry Kill, Northern Illinois - Almost pulled off the mild upset against the worst BCS team in the nation, Minnesota.

Houston Nutt, Ole Miss - The Rebels manhandled rival Memphis in a game that I thought would be a lot closer.

David Cutcliffe, Duke - Defeated James Madison. Hey, at Duke, a win's a win.

Bo Pelini, Nebraska - Destroyed Western Michigan at home.

Kevin Sumlin, Houston - Won big against Southern. His Cougars are looking very sharp.

Larry Fedora, Southern Miss - Defeated Louisiana-Lafayette. Real test comes next week.

Thursday Recap

Thursday officially marked the first day of the college football season. It also marked the first of many fights I will have with my wife over the viewing of said college football. She's got to understand there's a certain order for my priorities in life right now:

1. Me.
2. College Football
3. My entertainment
4. Family.

That seems about right. How could she get mad at me? Anyway, here's a brief recap on the happenings around college football Thursday night.

ESPN showcased the North Carolina St. v. South Carolina match-up. The Gators weren't involved in this one but it sure seemed like it. UF references were made throughout the game with the OBC on the Cock sideline, Jesse Palmer in the booth and Erin Andrews reporting. In case you were in a comma last night, Palmer played QB for Spurrier at Florida. Chris Fowler must have mentioned that fact 40 times. Also, all the references to Palmer being on the Bachelor are very unnecessary.

The actual game was a complete douche fest. SC QB Tommy Beecher threw four picks and the OBC never once slammed his visor! What kind of shit is that? Also, the refs are taking this whole new celebration rule enforcement thing a little too seriously. I mean, giving a guy a penalty because he's doing push-ups after missing an int? That's a little ridiculous.

It's safe to say Jim Harbaugh has done a tremendous job of getting the Stanford Cardinal back to being competitive. Stanford pulled off a mild upset by defeating the Oregon St. Beavers late last night. The Cardinal have a RB named Toby Gerhart that is the real deal. This guy is big and has deceptive speed. The way he broke through Beaver tackles made you think Ron Zook was the OSU coach.

Both of the Miamis were in action last night. Miami(FL) wooped up on Charleston Southern behind QB Jacory Harris. Miami(OH) faltered at home against the almighty Vanderbilt Commodores. By the way, Vandy CB D.J. Moore is a legitimate All-American candidate. I would like to hear any of his doubters now.

Wake Forest got their first ever victory in the state of Texas by knocking off Baylor. Wake is a dark horse national title contender this season. If Riley Skinner can keep producing, the Deacs are capable of running through the weak ACC. Baylor dual threat QB Robert Griffin II was very impressive running the ball. Passing.....not so much.

Eastern Michigan won! That almost never happens.

Cincinnati and Connecticut both looked rather impressive while beating up on 1-aa teams. I think Cincinnati will surprise some people this year. Brian Kelly is a vastly underrated coach. Kelly's old team, Central Michigan, also got a win last night. Let the Dan LeFevour Heisman hype begin!

ESPN probably has the worst pre-game/halftime show crew ever. I love Lou Holtz, but these horrible gimmicks they make him do are ridiculous. The pep talk segments last year were a monumental flop. That shit fest looks like Emmy winning material compared to the new Dr. Lou crap they're trying to shove down our throats this season. Also, I hate Mark May. He sucks.

Can't wait for Saturday.

Countdown!

'Twas the day before football, when all through the land

A bunch of players he had suspended from his team,
And he looked like a skeleton from some sort of bad dream.

His cheeks were like roses, his nose was so crinkly!
His droll gaping mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And he looked like he was chasing Joe Paterno;
The combing of a playbook he held in his hand,
And the scribbling all over it made it hard to comprehend;

He had a broad face and a big round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old fart,
And I cringed when I saw him, ‘Cus I’m a Gator at heart;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know the ‘Noles were nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled out the playbook; then left like a jerk,
And laying his finger on top of his nose,
He pointed to a breathe-right strip, for health reasons I suppose;
He sprang to his car, to his team gave a Yo!,
And away they all fled like Geno Hayes at the sight of Tebow.


But I heard him exclaim, as he drove away,

"College football starts tomorrow, Dagummit, watch every play!."

Weekly Picks

I will be making picks every week throughout the CFB season. This, of course, is the first edition. Week 1 just might be the easiest week to predict because most schools throughout the country have scheduled a pansy for week 1.

Then again, we saw how unpredictable week 1 was last year.

As the season is drawing ever closer. I decided to make my conference picks.

As you all know, I don't like to bet, but if I did, I would be a millionaire because these picks are freaking golden.

We're down to single digits in the countdown. I'm pretty much suffering from sleep deprivation as the college football season draws near. I cannot wait for this season to get underway. The fact that week one is usually a tune up for the big boys does little to diminish my excitement. I hope everyone is ready for a great CFB season. I know I am!

Countdown: 12 Days!

12 Days

A lot of "experts" are predicting Texas to suffer a down year this season. I don't blame them for making that prediction. However, I think the Longhorns will surprise some people this season. I currently have them in my top 10. Actually, I want to move them lower but I'm too god damn lazy to make a whole new ranking list before week 1. So until Colt McCoy and the UT assholes screw things up, they're in my top 10. The Horns will face a tough Florida Atlantic team to open the season. Don't be surprised if Rusty Smith and the Owls give them all they can handle.

The Perfect Player

Every now and then a perfect player comes along that can do everything right. Just like Tim Tebow. However, for the most part, no matter how good a player is, there is always a certain area that he has a weakness in.

I want to play the mad scientist for a minute and create the perfect player. Since I am a genius, one day I may be able to find a way to concoct such a player. Until then, here is what I'm looking for.

I'll break down the positions into 5 categories that I feel are essential to that position.

Quarterback

Mobility - Pat White, West Virginia. There has been a very large influx of dual threat quarterbacks in CFB recently. None have been more mobile than Mr. White. The guy is more of a threat running the ball than he is passing it. Appalachian St.'s Armanti Edwards was a close second.

Arm Strength - Matthew Stafford, Georgia. You knew this kid was going to have a strong arm when we found out his favorite hobby is keg slinging. If I were Mark Richt, whenever I wanted to give Knowshon Moreno a break, I would just call all go routes.

Accuracy - Rudy Carpenter, Arizona St. The Sun Devils burst back into the national scene last season. One of the main reasons for their insurgence was the precision passing of QB Rudy Carpenter. This guy is NFL ready right now.

Decision Making - Sam Bradford, Oklahoma. Last year, Bradford only threw 8 interceptions for the Sooners. One of the reasons why he should be a Heisman contender this season is his decision making while in the pocket. Oklahoma should have a better running game this season, which would help out Bradford tremendously.

"It" Factor - Tim Tebow, Florida. No other position in football requires the "it" factor more than the QB position. There's just something about Tebow that makes him special. Urban Meyer is not that far off when he says that Tim may be one of the best college football players ever.



Running Back

Speed - Chris Rainey, Florida. Rainey may be one of the fastest football players in America. He will share time with USC transfer Emmanuel Moody this season in the Gator backfield. However, don't be surprised if he's getting more carries as the season goes on.

Power - Jorvorskie Lane, Texas A&M. Lane is a beast. He's bigger than some of the Aggie offensive linemen. While some of his carries will be lost to Mike Goodson this season, there is still no running back in America I would rather have in short yardage situations than Lane.

Vision - James Davis, Clemson. No one is better at the art of cut-backs than James Davis. This guy is amazing. Every time I watch Clemson play, Davis pulls off an incredible run where he finds a hole on the opposite side of the field than no one else could find. He's definite NFL talent.

Elusiveness - Noel Devine, West Virginia. Devine is another running back that is in the same mold as James Davis. He is great at the cut-back run and is very hard to tackle. It doesn't hurt Devine's cause that he is so tiny. It's hard to find him coming out of the backfield.

Durability - Chris Wells, Ohio St. Beanie Wells is the prototypical hard nosed Big Ten running back. He will be the workhorse of the Buckeye offense this season. Good thing for Ohio St. Wells is one tough s.o.b.



Wide Receiver

Hands - Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech. Michael Crabtree may have the best hand is all of America. Crabtree and QB Graham Harrell form a very dangerous combo for the Red Raiders. Crabtree can pretty much catch anything you throw his way.

Speed - Jeremy Maclin, Missouri. It took every thing in my power not to make the homer pick and chose Percy Harvin for this category. Harvin's injury will slow him down a little this season and Maclin has world class speed. He can really stretch a defense in a hurry.

Break Tackles - Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina. Nicks doesn't get nearly the respect he deserves. Whenever the Tar Heels needed a play last season they went to Nicks. I've seen him break tackle after tackle to get the extra yardage necessary for a first down.

Blocking - Brian Robiskie, Ohio St. One of the more overlooked aspects of a wide receivers game is his blocking ability. This is a critical part to an offense's success. Robiskie is a very solid blocker at the wide receiver position. When he's not making plays for himself, he'll be clearing the way for Chris Wells in the open field.

Big Play Ability - Arrelious Benn, Illinois. Benn flashed signs of greatness last season. I expect him to make even more big plays this season. Benn is sort of like a cross between Randy Moss and Terrell Owens. He has the body like T.O., but he'll go up and get anything like Moss.

Remembering Bernie Mac: CFB Style

I'm sure you know by now that comedic legend Bernie Mac passed away Friday. One of the original "Kings of Comedy", I thought it best to do a memorial to the man.

Besides, Bernie Mac was funny as hell!


I've decided to do a little word association with Bernie Mac's movie titles. Below is a list of Bernie's movies. I have listed an aspect of college football that I think fits in well with the title.




Old Dogs - Joe Paterno & Bobby Bowden.
The buzz is growing stronger and stronger around these two legendary coaches' future. Bowden has already stated that he is not going anywhere until he rights the ship at Florida St. Paterno, on the other hand, hasn't really given a definitive statement on his future. This has led to a lot of talk concerning his potential replacements.

Soul Man - Tim Tebow.
The returning Heisman Trophy winner may have more soul than just about anyone else in college football. When he's not running over SEC linebackers, Tebow is busy performing circumcisions while on missions.

Transformers - Clemson.
It's always hard to predict which Clemson team will be showing up on a week to week basis. Some games, the Tigers look like the best team in America. Some games, Clemson looks like the biggest collection of douche jockeys known to man.

Ocean's Thirteen - Nate Davis.
This Ball St. QB could be a Heisman dark horse this season. With Dante Love to throw the ball to, Davis should put up some pretty big numbers. He will be competing with Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan all year for top billing among MAC QB's.

Pride - Temple.
Pride was a movie about some Philly teenagers that fought for every inch of respect they received. The same can be said for Temple this year. They will have to build upon last year's successes to earn the respect of people everywhere.

Guess Who - BYU.
BYU is the favorite to crash the BCS party this season. The Cougars play Washington and UCLA in non-conference games this year. If they can get through that part of the schedule unscathed, they could very well run the table in the Mountain West and gain a BCS bowl berth.

Ocean's Twelve - Colt McCoy.
All eyes in Austin will be on Colt McCoy this season. The success of the Longhorns is pretty much riding on McCoy's arm. He struggled a bit early last season, but seemed to pick it up towards the end of the year. We'll see if he can continue that form.

Mr. 3000 - Percy Harvin.
I know it will never happen, but Percy Harvin has a better chance of anybody of combining for 3,000 yards receiving and rushing. Harvin will get even more attention from Tebow now that Cornelius Ingram is lost for the season. Also, no matter how many running backs the Gators have, Urban Meyer will still not be able to resist getting the ball to Percy in the backfield.

Bad Santa - South Florida.
The Bulls have an excellent chance of playing Bad Santa to West Virginia this season. The two teams meet on December 6th. I expect West Virginia to be in the thick of the title race by then. However, just like the Pittsburgh game last season, the Mountaineers will falter vs the Bulls.

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle - Notre Dame.
Charlie's Weis' bunch will be going full throttle for him this season. The Irish will be trying to forget a disastrous 2007. Unfortunately for Notre Dame, I expect them to be just about as bad.

Head of State - Jim Tressel.
Jim Tressel will be looking to lead his Ohio St. Buckeyes back to the BCS Championship for the third straight season. Of course, Tressel will be praying that another SEC team doesn't make it back there with him.

Ocean's Eleven - Hawaii's Defense.
In a complete reversal of past seasons, the Hawaii Warriors will be relying almost exclusively on their defense this season. Unfortunately for Hawaii, the eleven men on defense won't be enough to avoid a losing season this year.

What's the Worse That Could Happen - LSU vs. Appalachian St.
Michigan was asking itself this very same question going into last season's opener. The Mountaineers provided a very loud answer to the Wolverine's question. Will LSU receive the same kind of answer this season?

Life - Rich Rodriguez.
Double R will be starting year 1 of his lifetime ban from the state of West Virginia this year. I'm sure Rodriguez is disappointed he can't step foot back in that shit dump of a state.

The Players Club - Georgia.
A movie about a bunch of thugs getting into all kinds of trouble? Sounds like a documentary about the Georgia football program to me.

How To Be A Player - Mark Richt.
Someone's gotta teach those ass clowns how to behave like a Bulldog.

BAPS - BCS.
Confusing initials that lead to hours of boringness. That sums up both the movie BAPS and the BCS.

Booty Call - Houston Nutt.
We'll see if Nutt can control himself at his new position this season. I feel sorry for him because the level of talent in Oxford is far greater that Fayetteville.

Get On The Bus - Jorvorskie Lane.
Texas A&M will be relying on Lane's broad shoulders and his running mate Mike Goodson to lead them back to a bowl game. New coach Mike Sherman will try to find more ways to get the ball into Lane's hands this season.

Don't Be A Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice In the Hood - Mark Sanchez.
Now that Sanchez is the man at USC, he'll need to try harder to stay out of trouble. Mitch Mustain will be praying Sanchez slips up.

Reasons - Greg Robinson.
I still don't know the reasons why Greg Robinson is still the head coach at Syracuse. Hopefully this is the last year of Robinson's tenure of shittiness.

Friday - Louisville, Boise St., & Fresno St.
ESPN will be showing a boat load of Friday night games this season. Louisville, Boise St. and Fresno St. will all make 3 appearances on Friday night. This is more than any other schools.

The Walking Dead - Idaho.
The Vandals are terrible. That's all I got.

Above The Rim - Kansas.
As soon as there was talk about Lawrence becoming a football town, the basketball team had to go and win a national title. Todd Reesing and the football Jayhawks will try to take back some of that thunder this season.

House Party 3 - SEC.
The SEC will be looking to make it 3 national champions in 3 years. The favorites are Georgia, Florida and LSU. Auburn has a chance, and Tennessee is a very big long shot.

Who's The Man - Andrew Hatch & Jarret Lee.
These two QB's will be vying for playing time at LSU. Hatch is the favorite to start opening day for the Bayou Bengals. However, I don't expect the Harvard transfer to keep Lee on the bench for long.

Mo' Money - Nick Saban.
I really could have went with any coach from the SEC, but it's always fun to pick on this dingleberry. Saban looks to lead the Tide to a more respectable record this season. With the recent motivation provided by Les Miles, the SEC West could get very interesting this season.

Baby Gators: Recruiting

The Gators have added another verbal commitment for the 2009 class.

New London, CT QB Jordan Reed has announced he plans to attend UF next Fall. There's not too much video out of this kid, but he's obviously smart for picking the greatest school in the universe.

These instances of tomfoolery seem to be more prevalent this year than in the past.

In honor of these grade A dumbasses, I've decided to make a team compiled completely of players that have been suspended or dismissed from their respective teams this upcoming season.

25 Days

East Carolina lost a ton of offense from last season in the form of Chris Johnson. The speedy tailback will be making the transition to the NFL this season. Despite Johnson's departure, the Pirates should still be very competitive in the much-improved Conference USA. While a trip to the conference title game may be out of reach, ECU should make it back to a bowl game.

Talented Trios

The glamour positions on most college football teams are the QB, WR and RB positions.

Some teams are more blessed than others when it comes to the talent that they have at these positions.

I've decided to rank the top ten QB, WR and RB trios in the nation. There are some teams that have 2 out of the 3 that didn't make my list like West Virginia. The Mountaineers have no proven receiver this season. Some teams on the list have more than one great player at a certain position. If that is the case, I will mention the other players.

Here is my top ten trios:


1. Florida Gators - QB - Tim Tebow, WR - Percy Harvin, RB - Emmanuel Moody.
Go ahead and accuse me of being a homer with this pick. You're probably right. However, if you give me a Heisman winning QB, a leading Heisman candidate WR and a RB that was PAC-10 Freshman of the year, I'll take it all day long. Emmanuel Moody seems to be the weaker of the trio, but he does have Chris Rainey backing him up. Rainey and Harvin on the same field will be a thing of beauty to behold.

2. Clemson Tigers - QB - Cullen Harper, WR - Aaron Kelly, RB - James Davis.
If I wasn't such a homer, the Tigers would probably be in the top spot of this list. The most talented player on their team isn't even a part of this trio. RB C.J. Spiller is explosive and agile, he could easily start over Davis. Tommy Bowden has a plethora of weapons on offense this season, and the Tigers should be able to get to the ACC championship with them.

3. Ohio St. Buckeyes - QB - Todd Boeckman, WR - Brian Robiskie, RB - Chris Wells.
Having Chris Wells at RB moved the Buckeyes high up on this list. Boeckman really surprised me last season with his performance. If he can produce like that again this year, both he and Robiskie should have solid campaigns. This may not be the flashiest trio, but it sure is one of the most talented.

4. Oklahoma Sooners - QB - Sam Bradford, WR - Joaquim Iglesias, RB - DeMarco Murray.
The Sooners are always loaded at these three positions. Iglesias should step in nicely as the first option at receiver. Murray is a bona fide superstar at RB. QB Sam Bradford should be in New York at the end of the season for the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

5. BYU Cougars - QB - Max Hall, WR - Austin Collie, RB - Harvey Unga.
All three of these players are All Mountain West caliber stars. The Cougars are heavy favorites to win their conference, and these three, along with a stout defense, are the main reason for that. Hall should be in contention for the Heisman throughout the season. The BYU passing attack should allow RB Harvey Unga to put up some big numbers.

6. USC Trojans - QB - Mark Sanchez, WR - Vidal Hazelton, RB - Joe McKnight.
The Trojans are perhaps the deepest team in the country at all three positions. Mitch Mustain will be backing up Sanchez, which is the weaker of the trio. Patrick Turner will actually get more receptions than Hazelton, I just happen to think Hazelton is more talented. The same can be said for the RB position as well. I listed McKnight as the RB because I feel he is more talented than the likely starter, Stafon Johnson.

7. Georgia Bulldogs - QB - Matthew Stafford, WR - Mohammed Massaquoi, RB - Knowshon Moreno.
I have to be honest, if it weren't for Moreno, the Bulldogs might not even make my top ten. Fortunately for Georgia, they have the best RB in the nation. Stafford should be much improved this season, as should Massaquoi. However, the Bulldog offense starts and stops with Knowshon.

8. Arizona St. Sun Devils - QB - Rudy Carpenter, WR - Chris McGaha, RB - Keegan Herring.
The Sun Devils have some great talent on offense this season. Some could even argue that their trio may be better than USC's. I think the one area that Arizona St. has an advantage over USC in is QB. Carpenter will most likely put up some gaudy numbers this season. Dennis Erickson has this program poised for a title run.

9. Nevada Wolfpack - QB - Colin Kaepernick, WR - Marko Mitchell, RB - Luke Lippincott.
This trio is different from the others in that it is mostly a running attack. Mitchell is a tremendous receiver, and Kaepernick does a terrific job of getting the ball to him. However, this offense revolves around the legs of Kaepernick and RB Luke Lippincott.

10. Pittsburgh Panthers - QB - Pat Bostick, WR - Derek Kinder, RB - LeSean McCoy.
The only sure thing about this trio is McCoy. Kinder is coming back from an injury that forced him to miss all of last season. Bostick is embroiled in a QB battle as of this moment. However, if both players play like they're supposed to, the Panther could be in Big East title contention.
