Five in a row!

Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators dismantled the Florida St. Seminoles yesterday at a soggy Doak Campbell Stadium. The Gators racked up over 500 total yards of offense en route to the victory.

Tebow helped increase his Heisman chances with another dominating performance against the School Out West. Tebow accounted for four touchdowns including one rushing and three passing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Percy Harvin was carried off the field in the second quarter after suffering a right ankle sprain. Seminole fans could be heard cheering as Harvin lay on the ground in pain. Tebow admitted that this helped motivate him to bust someone's ass out there. (Of course those are my own words.)

Now the real task of preparing for 'Bama and the SEC Championship awaits the Gators. Hopefully Harvin will be ready for next week. If you remember, the last time UF was in the SEC Championship, Harvin took home MVP honors as a Freshman.

Here's some highlight from the game. Look for Florida St. Safety Jamie Robinson to get his shit ruined at the 1:23 mark:

Here's some stats:

Passing
Tim Tebow 12-21 185 yards 3 tds

Rushing
Chris Rainey 8 97 yards
Jeff Demps 9 89 yards 1 td
Tim Tebow 16 80 yards 1 td
Emmanuel Moody 5 40 yards
Percy Harvin 6 13 yards 1 td

Receiving
Aaron Hernandez 4 recs 61 yards 2 tds
Louis Murphy 2 recs 49 yards 1 td
David Nelson 2 recs 36 yards

Jeff Demps 1 rec 11 yards
Carl Moore 1 rec 10 yards

Player of the Game

Tim Tebow - QB, Ruiner of Shit, Destroyer of Safeties

Tebow put together another highlight reel type game. The image of him leaving the field after scoring his lone rushing touchdown will live on in UF-FSU lore for all time. There was no Geno Hayes this year to pump Tebow up. He didn't need it. Timmy led the Gators to over 500 yards of total offense. Next up: SEC Championship.

Heisman Watch

We're getting down to the very end of the season. Most Heisman balloters have their lists all in order. In fact, there are some people who already know who they're going to vote for, no matter what happens the rest of the season.

With only a few more weeks to go, this may be my second to last Heisman Watch.

1. Colt McCoy - Texas QB

Season Totals
Passing
291-375 3,445 yards 32 tds 7 ints
Rushing
128 576 yards 10 tds

McCoy is the favorite to take home the Heisman in most circles. He put in another solid performance against the Aggies last night. McCoy scored four touchdowns, 2 passing and 2 rushing in the route of the Longhorns' in-state rival. McCoy shouldn't feel too comfortable. The incumbent is right on his heels.

2. Tim Tebow - Florida QB

Season Totals
Passing
148-225 2,114 yards 22 tds 2 ints
Rushing
121 427 yards 11 tds

Timmy T and the Gators are rolling right now. No team or player is hotter at this moment. He probably still won't have the numbers to take home the hardware this season, but Tebow has done enough to get an invite to NYC at the end of the year. If he has another game against FSU like he did last season, he could get some second place votes.

3. Sam Bradford - Oklahoma QB

Season Totals
238-349 3,710 yards 42 tds 6 ints

Bradford continues his prolific play for yet another week. His domination of Texas Tech last week was just another notch on his Heisman resume. Bradford's 42 touchdowns leads the nation in that category. We'll see if he can continue his Heisman campaign in Bedlam this week. If Bradford can put together another 4 touchdown performance, he may leap some people on this list.

4. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech QB

Season Totals
365-518 4,438 yards 39 tds 6 ints

Harrell slipped a bit thanks to his loss to Oklahoma last week. I've said all along that I don' think a Texas Tech player will win this award if they don't go undefeated. It's not that they don't deserve it, it's just that the Red Raiders haven't built up the reputation yet to have a Heisman winner on a non-national championship contending team.

5. Chase Clement - Rice QB

Season Totals
Passing
268-405 3, 431 yards 36 tds 7 ints
Rushing
129 563 yards 10 tds

Clement has put up practically the same numbers that McCoy has at Texas. Granted Clement is not playing the same level of comp as McCoy, but he is also doing it with far less talent (outside of Jarrett Dillard) than McCoy has at his disposal. It would be interesting to see what kind of numbers Clement could put up with a NFL-Caliber line blocking for him.

The Next Five:

  1. Dez Bryant Oklahoma St. WR
  2. Nate Davis Ball St. QB
  3. Javon Ringer Michigan St. RB
  4. Michael Crabtree Texas Tech WR
  5. Percy Harvin Florida WR

Florida - S.O.W. Preview

It's time for the annual Florida - Florida St. game. Thanks to both schools victories over Miami earlier in the season, this will be a true battler for the esteemed Seminole War Canoe trophy.

Finally, FSU is playing with a full roster and no suspensions. Unfortunately for them, this Gators team is possibly playing the best football in the history of the Florida program. Florida St. D's may actually be talented enough to keep up with the Gators on Saturday. Then again, we said the same thing about South Carolina.....

5 Keys to a Gator Victory

1. Score Early.

Florida has been absolutely dominant in the first half of their recent ball games. Playing in a hostile environment like Doak Campbell, it will be all that more important to get out in front early and shut the FSU faithful up. I don't know how effective scoring early will be at quieting the crowd though. I've seen FSU fans do their stupid little spelling thing after their team just picked up a first down in the fourth quarter of a 45-12 losing effort!

2. Instill Fear With Tebow.

Last year, the Seminoles seemed to give up once Tebow started running wild. I'd like to see if a feeling of deja vu came over the FSU D if Tebow started to repeat last season's performance. With all the NFL talk lately, this may be Tebow's last shot at FSU. You know he'll be fired up for this one!

3. Run Percy Harvin

Before there was Geno Hayes calling out Tebow only to get steamrolled. There was Myron Rolle calling out Percy Harvin only to get run right by. Two years ago, Rolle sated that Harvin didn't scare anybody on their D. He also said something to the effect that once he caught Harvin he would lay the wood on him. Harvin responded with something like Rolle couldn't catch him anyway so he wasn't too worried about it. Of course Harvin was correct. I wonder if FSU players are sick of eating crow?

4. DB's Make A Play

You bet your ass that's a picture of Avery Atkins making a play against the 'Noles. That happened to be the best game of Atkins' life. Someone from the Gators' secondary is gonna have to play that type of game on Saturday. Our cornerbacks are tiny compared to FSU's receivers, although that wasn't much of a problem against Georgia. Ahmad Black could be the key in our secondary. It would be a long day for the Noles offense if our secondary provided support for Mr. Spikes and company.

5. Invite UF's chapter of Phi Beta Sigma to Tally

Imagine if you will. You're a Florida St. receiver. You're running your route, hoping Ponder looks your way. Out of your ear hole you hear a blood curdling sound, "SIGMA!!! YOU KNOW!!!!". You immediately turn your head to see this:

You immediately give up on the play and charge into the stands to "take care of ya buness."

5 Players that need to step up

1. Louis Murphy - Murphy had a huge game last season. Plus he's a senior this year. Dallas Baker and Bubba Caldwell both had big games against the Seminoles in their final season. Time for Murphy to continue that tradition.

2. Percy Harvin - I expect Harvin to come close to the 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving feat again. He'll probably be the go to guy out of the backfield, and I look for Tebow to throw to him more often than not.

3. Joe Haden - Haden will probably draw the assignment of Greg Carr this weekend. Carr has Haden dominated size wise. However, Haden is a rockstar, and if he plays like the ALL-SEC corner that he should be, Carr should be shut down.

4. Will Hill - With every game that asses, Will Hill sees more and more playing time. This can only be a good thing as Hill is a bona fide superstar. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a pick this weekend.

5. Emmanuel Moody - Of course I had to put Moody on this list. He finally got over 100 yards last week. Albeit against 1-aa Citadel.

Here's some highlights from last seasons beatdown to wet your whistle.

Here's what some Florida and Florida St. fans are saying about the game over at Topix. It's amazing how some Nole fans are trying to play the character card. Really??? Florida St. Fan??? Character???? Wow, they get one bright light (Rolle) and all of a sudden they're the Ivy League of the South.

My prediction

Florida - 48

Florida St. - 15 (All Gano field goals.)

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

"Y'all put that down. Tim Tebow is going down this week . . . he's going down this week."

Ahhh! The quote heard around Gator Nation. The sad thing is, Mr. Geno Hayes was actually a good football player prior to this comment. Of course, he completely disappeared against Tebow and the Gators.

This may have been the biggest example of words coming back to bite you in the ass in the history of mankind.

The funny thing is, most Seminole fans really believed this douchebag of an idiot.

In fact when Tebow and Hayes got into on the first drive, all the FSU fans around me began whooping and hollering like the bunch of slack jawed retard hillbillies that they are. Of course, the very next play, Tebow bulldozed a couple of Seminoles to convert a first down.

And we all know how the drive turned out....

Unfortunately there's no pansy ass Geno Hayes this year to make some ridiculous ass statement. However, I'm sure there's some shit for brains on the Seminole squad that will say something to fire Mr. Timmy up.

I'll be doing a preview on the game either tomorrow or Friday, so just replay the above highlight over and over until then.

Upset Alerts:

Colorado over Nebraska - The Buffs need this win to become bowl eligible. I think Coach Hawkins gets them fired up enough to win it.

North Carolina St. over Miami(FL) - Just like last season, Tom O'Brien has the Wolfpack playing like ACC champs at the end of the year. If he can just find a way to have his team play like that all season long, he may have something special.

Tennessee over Kentucky - The Wildcats may be running into a buzz saw on this one. I don't see the Vol senior class letting Coach Fulmer go out without a win.

Oklahoma St. over Oklahoma - It's Bedlam! Anything can happen.....

And the winner is.....

I admit, I've been a little out of touch with my blogging lately. Contrary to popular belief, I have a life. It's hard to maintain such a highly successful blog like this one all by my lonesome.

Anyway I'm back and better than ever. My first real blog will be dedicated to the recently announced college football awards finalists.

Here are my thoughts on the finalists, along with my predicted winner.

No one really cares about kickers or punters, so I won't waste my time on those assholes. I do like Florida St.'s Graham Gano to win the best kicker award, and I like Utah's Louie Sakoda to take home the Ray Guy award.

Maxwell Award - Basically, like the Heisman, only shittier.

1. Tim Tebow - Florida QB - The ass whooping the Gators have been handing to their opponents over the recent weeks has greatly enhanced Timmy's status for this award. Had he continue to play at the level he was to start the season, there's no way he'd make this list.

2. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech QB - This may be Harrell's best opportunity to win an award this post season. There's no way he wins the Heisman on a one loss Texas Tech team. Especially with Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford in the same conference.

3. Colt McCoy - Texas QB - Colt is playing like last year's Tebow this year. He and the Longhorns have greatly exceeded everyone's expectations thus far. Winning the Maxwell award will be a great addition to an already stellar season.

The winner should be:

Colt McCoy. The guy is pretty much UT's offense. He's a white Vince Young, except he's a better passer.

Davey O'Brien - The best QB in all the land. Usually goes to the best passing QB.

1. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech QB - The fact that he's viewed as a system QB may hurt his chances to win this one.

2. Colt McCoy - Texas QB - See above.

3. Sam Bradford - Oklahoma QB - Sammy completes the Big XII South trifecta. Bradford has been nearly flawless all season long. Good thing for him there's no such thing as defense in the Big XII.

The winner should be:
Sam Bradford. I don't think there's any doubt that Bradford is the best passer in all the land. This award should be his to take home.

Chuck Bednarik - The top defensive player in the nation.

1. Rey Maualuga - USC LB - I picked this guy to win this award in the pre-season. I'm awesome.

2. James Laurinaitis - Ohio St. LB - I hate this dude. I don't even know why. I think someone should donate a neck to him. It looks like his head just sprouts straight from his shoulders. Steroids,it's a hell of a drug....

3. Aaron Maybin - Penn St. DE - Maybin has somewhat flown under the radar this season. He's been the most consistent player on the entire Big Eleven champion Nittany Lions team. All that being said, Maybin is pretty much a throw in to go with the other two guys on this list.

The winner should be:
Rey Maualuga. He's a beast. Being the leader of the undisputed top D in all the land probably makes this a no contest.

Outland Trophy - Awarded to the fattest, dough boyiest, lard ass in the country.

1. Michael Oher - Ole Miss OL - I've professed my no-homo love for Oher all season long. If he's not one of the top 3 linemen taken in the draft, I might have to bitch slap a few skeezers.

2. Andre Smith - Alabama OL - Smith is a big, big, big, huge, gigantic, gargantuan of a man. He's also pretty large.

3. Duke Robinson - Oklahoma OL - Robinson is the leader of what is perhaps the best offensive line in the country. It's no coincidence that Sam Bradford and the Sooner offense are playing out of their minds right now.

The winner should be:
Michael Oher. He probably won't win because he's going up against two guys from media darling programs. However, Oher deserves it more than the other two guys. He's a god (Totally no homo.)

Biletnikoff Award - The wannabe Jerry Rice's of the world.

1. Dez Bryant - Oklahoma St. WR - Really exploded onto the scene this season. He may have to have a huge game in Bedlam to overcome the lead that Michael Crabtree has established.

2. Michael Crabtree - Texas Tech WR - Speaking of Crabtree, we all know Mike gets Desmond Howard's vote. It's also safe to assume that most of the other voters will be signing off on a second straight Biltenikoff award for him.
3. Jeremy Maclin - Missouri WR - Don't get me wrong, Maclin is a tremendous talent. I just think there were other receivers out there more deserving than he to be named a finalist. Jarret Dillard, Percy Harvin and Hakeem Nicks come to mind.

The winner should be:

Dez Bryant. This is just wishful thinking. We all know Crabtree has this one locked up.

Jim Thorpe Award - The best DB in the country.

1. Eric Berry - Tennessee DB - The only bright spot on UT's team this season. Sometimes I actually feel bad for this guy. Then I hear Rocky Top and immediately start vomiting.
2. Malcolm Jenkins - Ohio St. DB - Much like Laurinaitis, Jenkins turned down some serious NFL money to come back to college. Unfortunately, he won't get another run at a national title this season. However, Jenkins does have a good shot at taking this trophy home.

3. Taylor Mays - USC DB - I truly believe it's between Mays and Berry for this award. Mays may get the advantage because he's actually on a team that doesn't constantly shit on itself.

The winner should be:
Taylor Mays. Even though I think Eric Berry is a better player than Mays, the strength of the rest of the SC defense helps him win this award.

Doak Walker Award - These guys can either go on to be Barry Sanders, or Ki-Jana Carter.....
1. Shonn Greene - Iowa RB - Greene really had a breakout year this season. His play has helped to push the Hawkeyes past a lot of people's (including mine) expectations.

2. Javon Ringer - Michigan St. RB - Ringer must have the sorest shoulders in the world right now. All he did was carry an otherwise inept Spartan offense to the brink of a Big Eleven title. Also, Ringer was a mainstay on my Heisman list throughout the season.

3. Knowshon Moreno - Georgia RB - Moreno's status with the college media has fluctuated all season long. He started out as a leading Heisman candidate, only to disappear for a while. Lately, Moreno's play has been outstanding. He may not be a Heisman candidate any more, but he's definitely in the running for this award.

The winner should be:

Javon Ringer. I just think that Ringer has been the best all around back all season long. His last performance against Penn St. may hurt his chances though.

Guest Blog : Gators First

The Good 'ol Boys from Gatorsfirst were nice enough to provide CFB 365 with another great article this week.

This post was provided by Chris of Gators First. Chris does a great job of laying out a proposed playoff situation. Unfortunately, I couldn't provide the whole article myself, so check out the full version here.

Enjoy!

Conference Realignment and Playoff Proposal…Part Deux

I recently read over James’s original realignment plan and I found it very interesting. It was basically a way to allow the major conferences to make a few minor additions and subtractions to their conferences to make sure the big ones will be guaranteed a championship game. He then went on to mention the Wetzel Plan, which called for a 16-team playoff. However, after reading both, I found that there were a couple of flaws. So, mainly because I have a lot of free time and have nothing better to do, I decided I would make some updates to both plans…

The main point I’d like to start with is that I propose to make eight 12-team conferences, each of which will be entered into the BCS. Yes you read that correctly, the BCS will stay. As much as the BCS has failed to determine the final two teams to play for the national championship game, it has done a good job on a much larger scale figuring out where teams stand. Read further and you’ll see where I’ll use it. As a 12-conference, each will be required to have a championship game, and the winner of that game will earn an automatic bid into a 16-team BCS championship playoff, similar to the NCAA college basketball tournament. The remaining eight playoff spots will go to the top eight teams in the BCS standings that are not already guaranteed a spot in the playoff. This usage of the BCS should quell people’s fears, because the only teams that might have an argument against the BCS will be those teams that feel their team deserved a chance when they were the 9th or 10th best team left of those not already guaranteed a spot. In my eyes, this argument holds no weight, because your team clearly wouldn’t have shown itself to be one of the top five best teams in the country at that point and you should stop your bitching. But I digress…

With that being said, you might be wondering to yourself “Wait, if there are eight 12-team leagues, that means there are only 96 BCS teams. What happens to the other 24 teams in the bowl subdivision?” That’s a good question for those who thought that… The remaining 24 teams will still have a chance to play in the tournament, as long as they have a BCS ranking that is in the top eight of the remaining slots. It’s that simple. I will discuss their role later.

I have looked hard at the top 96 teams in college football with respect to current play, history, and current conference value. I chose to leave out those teams out of the eight new conferences that have little value.

Here are the current conference lineups (those struck through weren’t added to new BCS conferences):

SEC

East – Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee

West – Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Mississippi St

Big 12

North – Iowa St, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas St, Kansas, Missouri

South – Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St

Big 10 (11)

Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio St, Michigan, Michigan St, Wisconsin, Penn St

ACC

Atlantic – Florida St, Boston College, Maryland, Wake Forest, Clemson, NC State

Coastal – Miami (FL), North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech

Big East

Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, Pittsburgh

Pac 10

Arizona, Arizona St, Southern Cal, UCLA, Stanford, California, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, Washington St

MAC

East – Temple, Buffalo, Kent St, Akron, Ohio, Miami (OH), Bowling Green

West – Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, Ball St.

Conference USA

East – Central Florida, UAB, East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss

West – Tulane, Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UTEP

Sun Belt

FAU, FIU, Middle Tennessee, Arkansas St, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Lafayette, North Texas, Troy

WAC

Louisiana Tech, New Mexico St, Utah St, Boise St, Nevada, San Jose St, Fresno St, Idaho, Hawaii

Mountain West

TCU, New Mexico, Air Force, Colorado St, Wyoming, BYU, Utah, UNLV, San Diego St

Independent

Notre Dame, Western Kentucky, Army, Navy

With my proposal, here are the new conferences, based off the old ones:

SEC

East – Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Clemson, Georgia Tech

West – Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Mississippi, Mississippi St, Kentucky

Notes: The SEC doesn’t change much. However, they replace Vanderbilt and Arkansas with Clemson and Georgia Tech. Vanderbilt isn’t very “SEC” and Arkansas isn’t geographically near the other SEC schools. Clemson would be a great fit because they, out of any other school in the southeast, resemble a true SEC school, as well as their longstanding rivalry with South Carolina. Georgia Tech also would fit in the east because of their rivalry with Georgia. Kentucky moves to the west division due to geographic complications.

Big 12

North – Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas St, Kansas, Missouri, Tulsa

South – Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Arkansas

Notes: The Big 12 also doesn’t change much. They replace Iowa St and Baylor with Tulsa and Arkansas. Iowa St seems like they should belong in the Big 10. Baylor has sucked at football for a long time now, and belongs with the likes of SMU, Rice, and Houston as poor teams from Texas. They never seem to beat any of the good Big 12 teams anyways. Tulsa would fit right in with the other teams from Oklahoma, especially with Gus Malzhan’s new offense. Arkansas used to be in the defunct Southwestern Conference, with a slew of other current Big 12 members. They’ll fit right in.

Big 10 + 2

East – Ohio St, Michigan, Michigan St, Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame

West – Minnesota, Northwestern, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa St

Notes: The Big 10 + 2 finally conforms to the conference championship game model that has worked for other major conferences. They replace Penn St with Notre Dame and Iowa St. Penn St joined the Big 10 in the early 1990’s, so leaving won’t take away from much of the tradition they have built over the last 15 or so years. They belong with other Big East teams. Iowa St. has a major rivalry with Iowa and this allows them to play every year within their conference. Notre Dame needs to get over themselves and join a conference already. This opportunity allows them to play big schools in their area. The conference will split evenly into two divisions, east and west. Also, they get to keep their traditional “big ten” name in their conference name, even though they have 12 teams. I’d like to see the clever logo they come up with next.

ACC

North – North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech, Virginia

South – Miami (FL), Florida St, Central Florida, South Florida, Vanderbilt, East Carolina

Notes: The ACC changes a lot. They replace Boston College, Maryland, Clemson, and Georgia Tech with Central Florida, South Florida, Vanderbilt, and East Carolina. I figured that Boston College and Maryland regionally fit with other teams in the northeast. Also, Clemson and Georgia Tech have big rivalries with other schools in the SEC and remind me of SEC college towns (Georgia Tech is better than Vanderbilt). For those coming in, it made sense to group the other Florida schools together as well as bringing in another school from the Carolinas. Vandy matches well with other schools of higher education like Duke, Virginia, and UNC.

Pac 12

South – Southern Cal, UCLA, Stanford, Hawaii, UNLV. Fresno St

North – California, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, Washington St, Boise St

Notes: The Pac 12 also finally conforms to the conference championship game model. They replace Arizona and Arizona St with Hawaii, UNLV, Fresno St, and Boise St. Remember, Arizona and Arizona St joined the Pac 8 to form the Pac 10 in the late 1970’s, so leaving won’t take away from much of the tradition they have built over the last 30 or so years. They belong with other Southwestern teams. Hawaii is about as Pacific as you can get, Fresno St and UNLV belong with the other California schools, and Boise St belong with the other northwestern schools. (not Northwestern Univ…). I’d be intrigued to see how Boise St fares with regular stiff competition, especially on the blue turf! The conference will split evenly into two divisions, north and south.

Big Kinda Northeast

Northeast – Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn St, Boston College

Southwest – West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Kent St, Akron, Ohio, Marshall

Notes: This conference brings together five teams from the current Big East, as well as a past member in Boston College, a current ACC member, and four current members of the MAC to form the Big Kinda Northeast Conference. I chose to do this because regionally it makes sense. The current Big East has only eight members, yet they get a guaranteed spot in the BCS, yet the Big 12 and the SEC (considerably better from top to bottom) have 12 teams and only get one guaranteed spot. At the very least, this move allows for a more legit argument for their inclusion. The conference will split evenly into two divisions, northeast and southwest (heh).

Conference USA

North – Ball St, Central Michigan, Bowling Green Cincinnati, Toledo, Miami (OH)

South – UAB, Tulane, Southern Miss, Memphis, Louisiana Tech, Louisville

Notes: This conference brings together five teams from the current MAC, four from the current Conference USA, two from the current Big East (yet former members of Conference USA), and Louisiana Tech, who inexplicably plays in the WAC with the likes of Boise St, Fresno St, and even Hawaii! I figured that I would call them Conference USA, mainly because they are the most spread out of any of my new conferences. On another note, did you know that the MAC current has 13 teams, six in one division and seven in another? Me neither! The conference will split evenly into two divisions, north and south.

Southwestern (SWC?)

Lone Star – TCU, Rice, SMU, UTEP, Houston, Baylor

Four Corners – BYU, Air Force, Arizona St, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico

Notes: This conference brings together five teams from the current Mountain West conference, four from the current Conference USA, two from the current Pac 10, and Baylor, who leaves the Big 12. I will call this the Southwestern Conference, mainly because they are in the southwestern part of the United States of America (weird right?!). The conference will split evenly into two divisions, lone star (consisting of all Texan schools) and four corners (I think the name explains itself.

Non BCS Schools

Temple, Buffalo, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, FAU, FIU, Middle Tennessee, Arkansas St, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Lafayette, North Texas, Troy, New Mexico St, Utah St, Nevada, San Jose St, Idaho, Colorado St, Wyoming, San Diego St, Western Kentucky, Army, Navy

Notes: I chose to exclude these schools from the BCS for many reasons. But the one that kept sticking out in my mind was the fact that all of these schools have either not been relevant for a long, LONG time, or never all at all. When I think of these teams, they are the first to come to mind when a major school schedules a pancake. With that said, I feel that these teams will have the opportunity to still make it to the BCS playoff that I will discuss shortly. All they will have to do is schedule some tough games and try to build their program with big wins. Maybe in the future, I would even put in a clause that they could replace another failing team from a BCS conference if they have a string of consecutive winning seasons and upset, a la English Premier League soccer (I refuse to call it football!). But that is for another blog, on another day…maybe in another life.

Here is my BCS Playoff Proposal:

1) Each conference will have a championship game held after the completion of the regular season. The winner of each division in the conference will represent their division in the championship game. The winner of said game to gain an automatic spot into the BCS playoff, regardless of their position in the BCS standings.

2) The remaining eight (8) “at-large” slots will be determined by the eight highest teams in the BCS standings, not already guaranteed a spot in the playoff tournament.

3) At most, three (3) teams from one conference can be represented in the playoff tournament.

4) At most one (1) team from a non-BCS conference can participate in the playoff tournament.

5) The seeding of the tournament will be determined by the final BCS standings, which will be released shortly after all of the conference championship games.

6) First and Second round games would be played at the home stadium of the team with the higher seed.

Imagine the possibilities of having a championship tournament. Every conference can have their chance to shine. A true champion will be determined. Also, the bowl system will still stay mostly in tact. For example, every bowl will have the opportunity to select teams after they have been eliminated from the tournament. All teams not in the tournament that have a winning record will still have the same chance of playing in a bowl game. The first place game will be the BCS National Championship game, and the 3rd place game can move to each of the current BCS bowl locations every four years, guaranteeing a premier matchup in that game.

Here is an example of what could happen:

Championship Game Results

SEC: Florida (2) defeats Alabama

Big 12: Oklahoma (1) defeats Missouri

Big 10 + 2: Ohio St (11) defeats Iowa

ACC: North Carolina (12) defeats Florida St

Pac 12: Southern Cal (4) defeats Boise St

Big Kinda Northeast: Penn St (8) defeats West Virginia

Conference USA: Ball St (13) defeats Louisville

Southwestern: Utah (5) defeats TCU

The remaining eight highest BCS teams could be:

Texas (3)

Alabama (6)

Texas Tech (7)

Georgia (9)

Boise St (10)

Michigan St (14)

Oregon (15)

West Virginia (16)

Heisman Watch

The race is coming down to the wire now. There are players that are making stronger and stronger cases for themselves. On the flip side, there are a few former Heisman wannabes that are nowhere near the discussion anymore.

I'm working on this post while I'm watching the Georgia Tech v. Miami game. I'm thinking Josh Nesbitt wants to be on this here list. The guy is gutsy. Reminds me of Byron Leftwich at Marshall a few years back.

1. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech QB

Season Totals
332-463 4,077 yards 36 tds 5 ints

Harrell and the Red Raiders took last week off. Having a bye week is pretty much the only way this guy can be slowed down. Harrell should put up some pretty big numbers against a porous Sooner D this weekend. However, it all comes down to the W for Harrell on Saturday. I don't see him winning the Heisman with a loss.

2. Colt McCoy - Texas QB

Season Totals
Passing
268-347 3,134 yards 30 tds 7 ints
Rushing
117 527 yards 8 tds

McCoy had a decent day against Kansas last week. Once again, Colt was extremely on point, going 24 for 34 with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. TAMU always plays Texas tough, but McCoy should have a field day both rushing and passing on Saturday.

3. Tim Tebow - Florida QB

Season Totals
Passing
139-214 1,913 yards 19 tds 2 ints
Rushing
119 393 yards 11 tds

Tebow has his Gators playing better than any team in the nation right now. The fact that Timmy has 30 total touchdowns with only 2 interceptions cannot be ignored. Tebow knows how to take care of the football. As I've said before, being the reigning Heisman winner will probably buy Tebow a few extra votes.

4. Sam Bradford - Oklahoma QB

Season Totals
224-330 3,406 yards 38 tds 6 ints

Much like Harrell, Bradford enjoyed his bye week, as he gets prepared for the monumental showdown this Saturday. Also, much like Harrell, I believe that Bradford will be knocked out of the Heisman race with a loss. Bradford did give one hell of an interview during College Gameday, so extra bonus points for him.

5. Javon Ringer - Michigan St. RB

Season Totals
353 1,548 yards 20 tds

Ringer continues to carry the Spartans on his back. Javon's two touchdowns were the difference in Sparty's victory over Purdue. Unfortunately for Ringer, the rest of his team will need to play a thousand times better this week if they want to pull off the upset against Penn St. Michigan St. is still in Big Eleven title contention. If they can miraculously pull this one out, Ringer is basically a shoe-in for a NYC invite.

The Next Five:

  1. Dez Bryant Oklahoma St. WR
  2. Nate Davis Ball St. QB
  3. Michael Crabtree Texas Tech WR
  4. Chase Clement Rice QB
  5. Percy Harvin Florida WR

Weekly Picks

Last Week - 37-13

What can I say? I'm a beast when it comes to these here picks! If I didn't love college football, I would be on the first flight to Vegas to place my bets right now. The only upset pick I missed last week was Michigan over Northwestern. I guess that's what I get for going with Lil' Blue.

Here's this week's edition of my dominance.

Upset Alerts

Central Michigan over Ball St. - The Chippewas are the two-time MAC champions. Something tells me they aren't going to just give that title away.

Florida St. over Maryland - Maryland is the truest definition of a helter skelter team. I think the 'Noles take it to them this week.

Arizona over Oregon St. - I really want the Beavers to win just so they can keep the Trojans away from the PAC-10 title. However, Arizona is a very dangerous team, especially at home. I think Tuitama goes off this week.

BYU over Utah - One thing I've learned from watching college football all my life; Always go with the underdog in the Holy War!
