Week 3 Preview

The college football season is finally starting to get it's legs under itself. For the most part, the cup cake challengers are long gone off of the heavyweight's schedules. Now it's time to get down to the business. There are several teams that will be opening up conference play this week, as well as several teams that are finally going to face somewhat of a challenge.

Here's what you need to know, as deemed by me, for week 3.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Games to Watch

1. Florida v. Tennessee - Of course this game is going to make the list. The Gators are finally going to face a team that will be somewhat competitive for at least two quarters. Maybe. We all know about the hype leading up to this game and I've already gone into great detail what I think about it.

2. Virginia Tech v. Nebraska - This is probably the best game that has not been talked about all year long. Both of these teams are solid defensively as well as great rushing teams. Roy Helu of Nebraska and Va Tech's Ryan Williams could be the deciding factors for this game. Also, look for special teams to play a major role.

3. Washington v. USC - This game looks like a blowout no matter which way you study it from. I am a sucker for new coaches facing their old teams though. That's what you have with this match-up. Steve Sarkisian's Husky squad is coming off it's first win since 1975. They will be all kinds of motivated to put up a fight against the Trojans. They still lose, and possibly lose big. But I'll enjoy watching it.

4. Oregon v. Utah - This is Oregon's chance to redeem itself. They already failed miserably in trying to take down a top-tier Non-BCS team this season. We all remember the LeGarrette Blount Bowl in Week 1. Now the Ducks get a shot at the Utes. I actually like the Ducks' chances in this one. They are playing at home, and Utah no longer has Brian Johnson taking snaps.

5. BYU v. Florida St. - The Noles will be fighting to earn some respect back in this game. After barely losing to Miami, Bobby Bowden's bunch went out and almost lost to the Gamecocks at home last week. That's not the South Carolina Gamecocks. That's the vaunted Jacksonville St. Gamecocks. The very same team led by the legendary Ryan Perriloux. BYU will be looking to continue their BCS season. Knocking off Oklahoma and Florida St in the same season will look really good in the school's media guide for years to come.

5 Players to Watch

1. Tim Tebow QB Florida - Tebow is coming into the game vs. the Vols extremely pissed off. You don't wanna make Timmy angry. He could be in for a huge day.

2. Darryl Clark QB Penn St. - Clark is another QB that could be in for a huge day. The Nittany Lions are hosting Temple.

3. Freddie Barnes WR Bowling Green - Barnes is among the nation's leader in nearly every receiving statistical category. This week the Falcons will be taking on Marshall. A team that is not well known for it's pass defense.

4. Damion Fletcher RB Southern Miss - The Eagles are hosting Virginia this week. The Cavs are one of the worst teams in the nation. They can't do anything right, much less contain a top-flight RB.

5. Dan LeFevour QB Central Michigan - Last week LeFevour led a come from behind victory vs. Michigan St. This week: Alcorn St. I think he'll do just fine.

The Best of the small guys

Non-BCS schools tend to get overlooked by the average college football fan. Since I am WELL above average, I decided to do a post entirely for these "little guys".

The following is a list of the top 25 players from non-BCS conference schools.

One day these players could follow in the footsteps of greats like Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Steve Smith, Brett Favre, Timmy Chang and Suge Knight.

One can only hope....

1.Dan LeFevour- If not for Tim Tebow, Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour would be the top dual threat QB din the nation. The Chippewas don't get too much pub. However, with a superstar like LeFevour leading the way that can all change.

2.Nate Davis- Davis is easily the most underrated QB in the nation. Playing at Ball St. will do that to you. There are numerous opportunities to catch this kid in action as the Cardinals are featured on several ESPN telecasts.

3.Eugene Jarvis- The leading returning rusher this season, Jarvis doesn't get too much pub because he plays at Kent State. Jarvis should put up huge numbers again this season with the total lack of a Golden Flash passing game.

4.Ian Johnson- The diminutive Boise St. running back became a cult hero after scoring the go ahead two-point conversion over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. He then followed that by becoming the biggest wuss know to man by proposing to a Bronco cheerleader after the play.

5.Jarret Dillard-Not much is going right for Rice football lately. Dillard is the exception. He has been the most consistent receiver in the country over the past 3 seasons.

6.Max Hall-I'm always skeptical of anyone named Max, but this BYU QB has changed my tone. I really like the way Hall plays, and he should lead the Cougars to an undefeated season.

7.Rusty Smith- The Florida Atlantic QB should produce another Sun Belt title for the Owls. Smith is the latest in a long line of great QB's that Howard Schnellenberger has coached.

8.Chase Holbrook- Holbrook followed Hal Mumme from Southeastern Louisiana to New Mexico St. and all he has done since then is become one of the better passers in the nation.

9.Gerald McGrath- McGrath is the heart and soul of the Southern Miss defense. He is a fierce run-stopping LB.

10.Brennan Marion-Marion averaged over 31 yards a reception last season for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. I don't care who you're playing against, that's impressive!

11.Bryan Anderson- Anderson is one of the more reliable receivers in the nation. He will provide a valuable target for Dan LeFevour at Central Michigan.

12.Dante Love-Nate Davis and Dante Love are quietly becoming the deadliest duo in the nation at Ball St. If they can get some help look for the Cardinals to give Central Michigan a run for their money.

13.Joe Burnett- Burnett is a big time play-making corner for the UCF Kinghts.

14.Damion Fletcher- Fletcher should find wider runner lanes at Southern Miss with the arrival of Larry Fedora. Look for a big senior season from Damion.

15.Trae Johnson- Johnson joins Brennan Marion to give Tulsa one of the more dangerous receiving corps in the nation.

16.Solomon Elimimian- Solomon comes back at LB to lead what should be a much improved Hawaii defensive unit.

17.Frantz Joseph- With FAU's high powered offense, their defense often gets overlooked. Joseph leads a stellar group at LB for the Owls.

18.Jeremy Childs-Childs has been overlooked recently at Boise St. due to the presence of Jared Zabransky and Ian Johnson. Childs is electric with the ball in his hands. That's why the Broncos use him much in the same way that Florida uses Harvin.

19.Luke Lippincott- Along with QB Colin Caepernick, Lippincott forms one of the better rushing attacks in the nation at Nevada.

20.DeAndre Wright-Wright doesn't get too much pub because he plays out in the desert for New Mexico. The Lobos have always been a hard hitting team, and even though Wright plays corner, he can really hit.

21.Jan Jorgensen- This BYU defensive linemen could be in the running for a few post season awards this year. The Cougars defense should be much improved, which is scary to go along with their offense.

22.Duke Calhoun- Calhoun may be one of the more talented players in the nation. He really needs to step it up at the receiver position for the Memphis Tigers this season.

23.Joe Henderson- UAB is not a very good team, but they have a great LB in Henderson.

24.Tom Brandstater- Brandstater is hoping to lead Fresno St. to that elusive WAC crown this season.

25. Brian Johnson- It seems that Johnson has been playing quarterback at Utah for like 7 years now. You know this senior will be hungry to knock off BYU in the Holy War this season.
