Countdown!

'Twas the day before football, when all through the land
Everyone was stirring, especially CFB fans;

The helmets were hung by the lockers with care,
In hopes that gameday soon would be there;

The cheerleaders were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of touchdowns danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'jersey, and I in my hat,
Had just settled down for a long fall’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the couch to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-cut grass
Gave the lustre of mid-day to OSU fan’s ass,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature horse, and an Indian with a spear,
With an old time coach, so dagummit lively,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Bobby.
More rapid than War Eagles his players they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Tebow! now, Daniel! now, Moreno and Harvin!
On, Wells! on Bradford! on, Harrell and Garvin!
To the back of the end zone! Go get that ball !
Now sprint away! sprint away! sprint away all!
"As dry leaves that before the Miami Hurricanes fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, on their backs they will lie,
So up to the field the players they ran,
With pads on their shoulders, and a football in their hands.

And then, in an instant, I heard on the tube.
The yelling and screaming of the Gameday Crew.
As I looked at the screen, and was turning around,
Through the door St. Bobby came with a bound.
He was dressed all in garnet, from his shoes to his shirt,
And his golf hat was tarnished with ashes and dirt;
A bunch of players he had suspended from his team,
And he looked like a skeleton from some sort of bad dream.
His eyes -- how they glazed! his dimples how wrinkly!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose was so crinkly!
His droll gaping mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And he looked like he was chasing Joe Paterno;
The combing of a playbook he held in his hand,
And the scribbling all over it made it hard to comprehend;

He had a broad face and a big round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old fart,
And I cringed when I saw him, ‘Cus I’m a Gator at heart;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know the ‘Noles were nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled out the playbook; then left like a jerk,
And laying his finger on top of his nose,
He pointed to a breathe-right strip, for health reasons I suppose;
He sprang to his car, to his team gave a Yo!,
And away they all fled like Geno Hayes at the sight of Tebow.

But I heard him exclaim, as he drove away,

"College football starts tomorrow, Dagummit, watch every play!."

Countdown: 8 Days!

8 Days

We're down to single digits in the countdown. I'm pretty much suffering from sleep deprivation as the college football season draws near. I cannot wait for this season to get underway. The fact that week one is usually a tune up for the big boys does little to diminish my excitement. I hope everyone is ready for a great CFB season. I know I am!

Countdown: 12 Days!

12 Days

A lot of "experts" are predicting Texas to suffer a down year this season. I don't blame them for making that prediction. However, I think the Longhorns will surprise some people this season. I currently have them in my top 10. Actually, I want to move them lower but I'm too god damn lazy to make a whole new ranking list before week 1. So until Colt McCoy and the UT assholes screw things up, they're in my top 10. The Horns will face a tough Florida Atlantic team to open the season. Don't be surprised if Rusty Smith and the Owls give them all they can handle.

Countdown: 25 Days!

25 Days

East Carolina lost a ton of offense from last season in the form of Chris Johnson. The speedy tailback will be making the transition to the NFL this season. Despite Johnson's departure, the Pirates should still be very competitive in the much-improved Conference USA. While a trip to the conference title game may be out of reach, ECU should make it back to a bowl game.

JoePa's Successor?

A lot of talk has been going down lately about who should be next in line at Penn State once Paterno steps down. I guess this has been a hot topic as of late because everyone figures Joe will retire after this season.

Wrong.
JoePa is going to coach forever. He will never retire. You know what else? Penn St. will be better for it. No one wants to go to Penn St. just because it's Penn St. People want to wear the PSU uniform so that they can have the opportunity to play for Paterno.

However, since everyone and their momma is making a JoePa successor list, I figured why the hell not.

Here are my top candidates to replace the un-replaceable one.

1. Greg Schiano - The current Rutgers head coach is the most likely choice as of now. In a recent poll on this most awesome of sites, you people voted Schiano as the leading candidate as well. The only problem is from Schiano's end. He repeatedly has turned down job opportunities to remain at Rutgers. I don't see that happening here. I believe Schiano would jump at a chance to coach the Nittany Lions. Like it or not, he would have a better chance of winning in the Big Eleven as opposed to the Big East.

2. Galen Hall - Hall is currently an assistant coach under Joe Paterno. If PSU were to give JoePa the power to pick his own replacement, I'm sure Hall would be his choice. Unfortunately, it seems Penn St. will not afford him that opportunity. One negative on Hall is his age. The Nittany Lions would effectively be moving from one old guy to the next. Usually you see a program go considerably younger when a long term coach is stepping down.

3. Bret Bielema - I've seen the current Wisconsin head coach named as the favorite to replace JoePa on several sites. I don't see what Bielema's motivation would be in making this move. He seems to be set up for better success at Wisconsin. Also, making a lateral move within the Big Eleven doesn't seem to make much sense. Then again, I thought Tom O' Brien was crazy when he did the same thing in the ACC.

4. Al Golden - I can't believe a Temple head coach is being named in job searches now. Granted, Golden is a long shot, but just the fact that he's being mentioned is a testament to his coaching ability. If Golden can improve the Owls consistently his name could be mentioned for several other positions. You never know, if Paterno sticks around for a few more years, Golden may be the hottest coach on the market.

Countdown: 30 Days!

30 Days

Syracuse will probably be the worst BCS conference team this season. Hopefully that will finally allow the administration at Syracuse to pull their heads out of their asses long enough to fire Gregg Robinson. Robinson is a total waste of a coaches' salary. Now the Orange actually get out-recruited and out-played by the likes of Rutgers, Temple and Buffalo. What the hell is going on here?

Countdown: 32 Days!

32 Days

Pittsburgh is a trendy pick to take over the top spot in the Big East this season. I know the Panthers will be very talented, but I think they are still a year or two away from competing for the Big East Title. That being said, Pitt should make a bowl game this season. WR Derek Kinder and RB LeSean McCoy are two of the top performers at their respective positions. I'm still not entirely sold on Dave Wannstedt as a college coach. He sure can recruit, but he just can't seem to translate that talent into wins.

Countdown: 37 Days!

37 Days

To continue the recent theme of shitty ass ACC, the subject for today's countdown will be the Virginia Cavaliers. While I don't expect Virginia to follow last season's stunning success with another great run, I do expect them to be more competitive than people are giving them credit for. Cedric Peerman and Mikell Simpson create what is perhaps the best running duo in the conference. Probably second only to Clemson's James Davis and C.J. Spiller. I expect the Cavs to make another bowl game this season, despite the drop-off.

Countdown: 38 Days!

38 Days

Clemson is nearly a consensus pick to win the ACC this season. You won't find too much of an argument from me. With players like James Davis, C.J. Spiller, Cullen Harper and Aron Kelly on offense, the Tigers may be unstoppable. Having players like Chris Chancellor (Pictured above) on D doesn't hurt either.

Countdown: 41 Days!

41 Days

Boise St. is my pick to win the WAC once again. This may be Chris Petersen's last year coaching on the blue turf. I'm sure there will be a few big name schools wooing him in the off season. RB Ian Johnson is a bonafide Heisman contender.

Countdown: 44 Days!

44 Days
Eastern Michigan is garbage. Everything about them is horrible this season. Everything except Daniel Holtzclaw (Pictured above), that is. The Eagles actually had a decent season by their standards last year. Of course a decent season for EMU standards is more than one win. We'll see if they can duplicate that success this season.

Countdown: 46 Days!

46 Days

Everyone already knows how horrible Michigan is going to be this year. So instead of harping on the obvious, I figured I'd throw out some positives for the Wolverines this season.

  • Michigan fans aren't as obnoxious as Ohio St. fans.
  • Michigan won't suck as hard as Notre Dame.
  • Rich Rodriguez is slightly less of a douche bag than Nick Saban.
  • Michigan Stadium is really, really, really big.

There you go, now you can never say I never say anything nice about Michigan.

Countdown: 49 Days!

49 Days

The Texas A&M Aggies will be welcoming new HC Mike Sherman this season. The Shermanator will be replacing the much maligned Dennis Franchione. The Aggies will have a powerful running game once again with the Thunder and Lightning combo of Jorvorskie Lane and Mike Goodson. Sherman is also promising a much more efficient passing game as well. TAMU should be able to make another bowl game, it is yet to be seen how good of a bowl berth they will get.

Countdown: 50 Days!

50 Days

Tennessee is coming off one of it's most successful season in recent years. Coach Fulmer received a fat pay raise in the off season to reward his efforts. Sadly for the Volunteer fan base, I don't see Tennessee getting back into the SEC title game. Florida and Georgia are both national title contenders, and I would even place South Carolina higher than the Vols. New QB Johnathan Crompton will have to play better than Erik Ainge if Tennessee hopes to avoid a let down in 2008.

Countdown: 51 Days!

51 Days

The Arizona Wildcats have the talent to be more competitive in the PAC-10 this season. The Cats will most likely have to make a bowl game in order to save head coach Mike Stoops' job. Arizona does have a decent passing attack with QB Willie Tuitama and WR Mike "Money" Thomas. 'Zona's defense will need to improve as well as their running game if they want to reach the next level.

Countdown: 52 Days!

52 Days
I've already expressed how crappy I think Notre Dame will be this season. Still, the Irish will manage to get most of the air time on ESPN cfb shows this season. Is there anyone in the world that actually likes Charlie Weis? I don't have any Notre Dame fans because I would probably end up laying the beat down on them, so there's no one for me to ask how they feel about Capt. Cholesterol.

Countdown: 53 Days!

53 Days

Tulsa appears poised to take up right from where they left off last season. Despite the departure of all-everything QB Paul Smith, the Golden Hurricane should be just as explosive on offense this season. The WR tandem of Brennan Marion and Trae Johnson may very well be the best wide out duo in the nation. RB Tarrion Adams is also back to provide a game breaker coming out of the backfield. HC Todd Graham just may be the next hot coaching name come next off season.

Countdown: 56 Days!

56 Days

The Minnesota Golden Gophers were the worst team in a BCS conference last season. Tim Brewster still managed to land a top notch recruiting class at Minnesota. They should be a better team this season. However, the Gophers are still a few years away from a bowl berth.

Countdown: 57 Days!

57 Days

West Virginia has been in the headlines most of this off season mainly because of their former coach, and professional bed wetter, Double R. New head coach Bill Stewart just may be the nicest man in America. He has a lot of talent returning to Morgantown for another title run this season. Pat White is back at QB, and Noel Devine should help Mountaineer fans forget all about Steve Slaton.

Arizona St. was definitely one of the surprise teams in college football last season. Dennis Erickson had his Sun Devils firing on all cylinders for much of last season. Unfortunately, ASU did not get a BCS bid and they had to settle for the Holiday Bowl. The Sun Devils then went on to get dismantled by the Texas Longhorns in said bowl. There are high expectation in the desert this year. We'll see if the Sun Devils can live up to them.
