Cocktail Time!

I normally don't just copy and paste an entire column for another website. But this article from Gator Sports (check the link on the side) was too good to just paraphrase. You all can thank Pat Dooley for this masterpiece:

It could have been bigger.

The entire Georgia team runs onto the field and celebrates the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the game in the end zone during the first quarter against Florida last year in Jacksonville.

It could have been, like, Super Bowl big. OK, maybe that's taking it a bit far, but it could have been a lot bigger.

It's still big.

Florida vs. Georgia has been circled on mental calendars in the nations Gator and Bulldog since, well, since the end of last year's game. The plan was for the two teams to come to Jacksonville undefeated. Didn't happen. Alabama and Ole Miss got in the way.

The truth is that it's not even the biggest game in college football on Saturday. If you go simply by rankings and BCS implications, the biggest game of the week will be played in Lubbock, Texas, which is in itself big.

Florida and Georgia each stumbled once down the path to this game but it's still huge. In fact, it's the biggest World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party ever.

There have been bigger games for one side. In 1976, Florida would have won its first ever SEC title by beating Georgia. In 1980, Georgia came in ranked second in the country and ended up winning the national title.

But both teams have so much on the line on Saturday, this is the biggest. Here are five reasons why:

The rankings

In terms of pure Associated Press rankings, this one ties the 1983 game. That year, Florida was ranked ninth and Georgia fourth. This year, Florida is ranked fifth and Georgia eighth. Add the rankings for both years and you get 13, which will be unlucky for one side.

In '83, Florida's scout team members all wore No. 44 during practices because Georgia had beaten Florida 44-0 the previous year. The Gators led late but a Georgia drive (aided by a bogus personal foul penalty against Wilber Marshall) gave the Bulldogs a 10-9 win.

This is only the second time the two teams have met with single-digit rankings. It was close in '76 with Florida 10th and Georgia seventh, in '99 with Florida fifth and Georgia 10th and in '98 with UF fifth and UGA 11th.

The BCS

Both teams need some help to reach the national title game but need to help themselves with a victory. Georgia is sixth in the latest BCS standings while Florida is eighth. The standings won't matter to Florida or Georgia if two of the three unbeatens at the top of the list go undefeated, but if one of them is Alabama, the winner of this game likely will have a shot at knocking off the Tide in the SEC Championship Game.

If Texas beats Texas Tech this week, that eliminates one team ahead of Florida. If Tech wins, the BCS standings will be a crazy ride through November. We could end up with this scenario — unbeaten Penn State and a bunch of one-loss teams (assuming Texas Tech loses somewhere along the line). Gentlemen, start your computers.

What adds to the importance of this game is that the loser is finished. There won't be a two-loss team playing in the title game.

The East

This could be for the right to play in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. I say could because you never know what can happen. Let's say it should be for Atlanta.

When Florida and Tennessee used to play those gigantic September games back when the Vols were relevant, the loser was essentially 1 1/2 games behind. But there was a lot of football to be played. The loser of this game is in the same boat with only two games to play in the SEC.

If the Bulldogs win, they would only need to win one of two games at Kentucky or at Auburn to clinch the East because they would hold the tiebreaker of head-to-head competition over Florida. Should Florida win and lose to South Carolina, the Gators would still go. But if they lose to Vandy and Vandy wins the rest of its SEC games (Kentucky and Tennessee) we'd have a three-way tie if Georgia won out. Then, it goes to the higher-ranked BCS team which would be Florida or Georgia.

The celebration

There is no question that the end zone celebration by Georgia jump-started the rivalry. Florida fans are thirsty for revenge, Georgia fans think Florida fans are whiners. It has intensified the feelings for this game like never before. Florida-Georgia was always been intense but never like this.

Last year's celebration will be hyped up all week and right up until game time. Hopefully, some of the talking heads will spend a little bit of time analyzing the matchups.

The streak

This has been a streaky series. Whether it's mental or momentum is anyone's guess, but history tells you that when one team gets it going, it gets it going for awhile.

Georgia's problem is that it has been a long time since it had a winning streak in the series. The Bulldogs won three in a row from 1987-89, the last time they have won more than one in a row. Since then, Florida has run off winning streaks of seven, six and two.

It's important for Florida to cut off the momentum and not allow Georgia to have anything more than an occasional win. It's important for Georgia to be able to feel good about itself for more than one year.

In other words, it's important.

It's big.

It's the biggest Florida-Georgia game ever.

Domination

You know it's a big day for the Gators when David Nelson graces the stat sheet.

The Gators absolutely dominated every facet of the game on their way to a 63-5 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats. What's most impressive about that score is the fact that Kentucky came into the came with the top scoring defense in the SEC. These are the same Cats that gave number 2 Alabama all it could handle a week ago. It also didn't hurt that the Gators special teams unit was able to block three kicks in the game.

This was a great sign heading in to the cocktail party this weekend. Georgia did their part to make the game interesting my dismantling LSU. This is possibly the most hyped Florida-Georgia game EVER.(More on that in a future post.)

I don't wanna dwell too much on the Kentucky game. I don't want to hurt my baby Ashley Judd's feelings.

Just for shits and giggles:

Here's the stats!

Player of the Game

Tim Tebow - Quarterback, Superman, Sexual Beast!

Timmy T finally gets my player of the game honors. His four touchdown performance stood out to me. His passing numbers weren't that great, and he threw a pick, but he found the damn end zone! It was a big bonus Meyer was able to rest him the entire fourth quarter. That should give Tebow plenty of time to get up for UGA. As if he needed any more time.....

Random Thoughts for the Upcoming Week

There are a handful of teams looking to remain undefeated this week. Some are almost guaranteed to win, while others are dacing more difficult opponents.

Here's what the unblemished squads will be facing:

Boise St. will travel to Northern Mexico to play the San Jose St. Spartans. This might just be the last chance for the Broncos to lose. That's bad news for some teams on the BCS bubble. If it came down to an undefeated Boise St. team and a perfect Utah team, I'd have to think the nod would go to the Broncos. Maybe...

Mike Leach takes his Texas Tech squad to Lawrence to take on the Fighting Manginos. I think this game will be extremely close. Kansas hung tough with Oklahoma last week until Sam Bradford lost his freaking mind. Kansas will have to avoid letting Graham Harrell do the same thing if they want to pull off the upset.

Ball St. will host Eastern Michigan this week. Ball St. will win. That's all I got.

Oklahoma St. and Texas will battle it out in the only game featuring two unbeatens. If the Longhorns play lik they did against Missouri last week, there's no chance for the Cowboys. If Dez Bryant continues to produce like he's the best receiver in the nation outside of Jarrett Dillard, Mike Gundy's men could be walking out of Austin with a win. I've already picked Texas to win this one.

Alabama takes on Tennessee in the god awful city of Knoxville. If Bama can get past all the hillbillies shouting the dreadful lyrics to Rocky Top every 10 seconds, they should do just fine. God I wish someone would line up all the Vols fans so I can kick them in the nuts.

In what the World Wide Leader has deemed the game of the week, Penn St. traves to the Shoe to take on the Terrelle Pryors. I have actually picked OSU to win this one. As much as I should be rooting for Penn St. to lose, I just don't know if I can cheer for the Buckeyes.

On Sunday, Tulsa plays UCF. David Johnson should have another huge game for the Golden Hurricane. It's unfortunate how bad the formely Golden Knights have become.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the other end of the spectrum, Washington and North Texas will both be looking for their first wins. I picked Washington to upset Notre Dame at home this weekend. Mostly due to my hatred for the Irish, the team and the people. North Texas is gonna lose in a game that no one will even know about. As bad as the Mean Green are this year, I wouldn't expect them to stay down for too long. They have a plethora of talent on the offensive side of the ball. It's just too bad Hayden Fry isn't available to coach.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Stories to follow:

  1. How many coaches will Syracuse contact this weekend about their coaching job? Randy Edsall down. Next up, Al Golden.
  2. How many dumb ass new segments will CFB Live do? How about trying to see who can mention Hitler's name more often when talking about bad coaches?
  3. Will USC choke against another inferior PAC-10 team?
  4. How many more Florida St. violations will the NCAA uncover?
  5. Will Jim Grobe slip in the puddle of tears from Randy Shannon's constant crying?

Heisman Watch

Finally there's a few more fresh faces on my Heisman watch list. We'll see if these guys can last a while. There seems to be a good mix of position players. It's not ALL about the quarterbacks....

Here's this week's Heisman watch.

1. Colt McCoy - Texas QB

Last Week vs. Missouri
Passing
29-32 337 yards 2 tds
Rushing
11 23 yards 2 tds

Season Totals
Passing
160-197 1894 yards 19 tds 3 ints
Rushing
70 371 yards 6 tds

This is one constant on my list. Colt McCoy provided another example as to why even Timmy Tebow thinks he is the front runner for the Heisman. Granted, Missouri players probably don't even know how to spell defense, let alone play it. There's still no way a QB should go 29 for 32 against them! The road just keeps getting tougher for McCoy as he gets prepared to take on the Oklahoma St. Cowboys this weekend.

2. Sam Bradford - Oklahoma QB

Last Week vs. Kansas
36-53 468 yards 3 tds

Season Totals
170-238 2520 yards 26 tds 5 ints

Bradford set all kinds of records against the Kansas Jayhawks' "defense" on Saturday. Sammy probably still has to hope for McCoy to lose for him to become the front runner once again. The way things are looking, I'm not so sure that will happen. At least Bradford will still get an invite to the NYC.

3. Graham Harrell - Texas Tech QB

Last Week vs. Texas A&M
44-56 450 yards 3 tds 2 ints

Season Totals
222-318 2761 yards 23 tds 5 ints

Harrell slipped a bit from last week mostly in part to his two interceptions. It's hard to maintain your spot on the Heisman watch when guys behind you are having near perfect games. The fact that the picks came against a not so good Aggie team also hurt him. Harrell will have a big shot to prove himself in a few weeks when Tech takes on the Longhorns.

4. Jarrett Dillard - Rice WR

Last Week vs. Southern Miss
7 141 yards 3 tds

Season Totals
53 815 yards 14 tds

Dillard is the second Rice player to grace this least so far this season. He joins QB Chase Clement as the two Owls to make this extremely prestigious list. The NCAA career receiving touchdown leader is at it again this season. Clement to Dillard is among the elite duos in the country. It's a shame more people don't get to witness this tandem.

5. Dez Bryant - Oklahoma St. WR

Last Week vs. Baylor
11 212 yards 2 tds

Season Totals
45 809 yards 11 tds

Dez Bryant completely leapfrogged a bunch of nobodies to make his first appearance on this list. Bryant is quickly proving that Jeremy Maclin is no longer the most dangerous receiver in the Big XII. If it weren't for the WWL completely ignoring OK St. for whatever reason, this guy would be a household name by now. We'll see if the pressure of making CFB 365's Heisman watch will be too great for him to handle this week.

The Next Five:

  1. Percy Harvin Florida WR
  2. Donald Brown Connecticut RB
  3. Javon Ringer Michigan St. RB
  4. Chase Daniel Missouri QB
  5. Matt Grothe South Florida QB

Weekly Picks

Last Week - 39-13

Overall - 360-85

I bounced back rather nicely last week. Finally a few of my upset picks payed off. Some other ones, not so much. I am now officially a believer in the Texas Longhorns. We'll see how long that lasts.

Baseball and beer pong provided a nice distraction from some of the shitty games this past week. Hopefully this week's slate will provide some better match-ups.

Here are my ever so powerful picks:

Ohio @ Temple
Auburn @ West Virginia
New Mexico @ Air Force
Boise St. @ San Jose St.
Texas Tech @ Kansas
Eastern Michigan @ Ball St.
Northwestern
@ Indiana

Penn St. @ Ohio St.
Southern Miss @ Memphis
Notre Dame @ Washington
Colorado St.
@ San Diego St.
Oregon @ Arizona St.
USC @ Arizona
Nevada @ Hawaii
UCF @ Tulsa

Upset Picks:

Purdue over Minnesota - I like what the Gophers are doing this season. I just can't see the Boilermakers letting Joe Tiller go out with a losing season.

North Carolina over Boston College - I ranked BC in my top 25 for the first time this season. I follow that up by picking them to lose to the Tar Heels. The worst thing that could have happened to the Eagles was UNC losing to UVA last week.

Rutgers over Pittsburgh - Picking Rutgers last week payed off for me. I'm going for it again! I still have faith that Rutgers can pull it around and that Dave Wannstedt can still find a way to totally screw this season.

Ohio St. over Penn St. - Not sure how much of an upset this really is. I like for the Buckeyes to defend home turf and knock off Penn St. Also, with PSU's remaining schedule it would greatly benefit my Gators if they lost on Saturday.

Washington over Notre Dame - Wouldn't it be sweet if this was the only game Washington won all year? What a way to send coach Ty out!
